“R” 02-03-15

What comes after Q?  R…..and R.   After a crazy two weeks playing with our friends, we were ready for some Rest and Relaxation. We spent almost a week in the small town of Blythe California, just over the border from Arizona.  I think it was 2 days before I even left the rig.  Between cleaning the piles of dust out of everything and sitting like zombies in front of the TV, there wasn’t much time for anything else-except laundry.  I did plenty of laundry.

The cable was about the only thing this RV Park (Riviera RV) has going for it.  The pool is unheated and the hot tub doesn't get warm until late afternoon.  Its right on the river but the water is sometimes so low, we wouldn't have been able to launch the dinghy. Not that we had the energy for that anyway.

We did, one afternoon, drive the short 2 mile trek to where Julie, Mike, Dave and Nancy were staying, and swam in their heated pool all afternoon. No pictures though.

Once we regained some energy we headed out to find some hiking.  There aren't many trails around here, so we just walked out in the desert, near the Blythe Intaglios.

Intaglios are figures that are carved into the earth.  They are thought to be ancient, but since there is no way to date them, no one really knows how old they are.  These were discovered in the 1930s.

This one is 171 feet long, surrounded by a chain link fence and is better seen from the air:

Our other outing was to Cibola  National Wildlife Refuge. We started at the small museum, which is where we saw this guy.

Although there isn't too much hiking, there is a short driving loop designed for wildlife viewing.  We did see what we think is a Northern Harrier Hawk.

Along the road we kept seeing what looked like graves, complete with little crosses, but actually they are nests for burrowing owls.  We didn't see any owls though.

The guys spent quite a long time examining these ruins.  No doubt they were deciding how they would renovate it.

That was about the extent of our exertion in Blythe, and we have since moved on to Lake Havasu City. Actually, we will be here for almost two months- it might be a record for us!  We are spending the first week at the state park, which is right on the lake.
